They resemble yellow lentils (arhar or toor dal) but are slightly bigger and coarser. They are stronger in taste than most other lentils and have a sweet aroma and flavor. Chana dal is also used to make payasam, a sweet dish made with jaggery, coconut milk, nuts and raisins.
